Job Summary

Under the direction of Director of Lab Operations, the Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) utilizes professional knowledge, skills and judgment to perform a variety of technical, clerical, physical and quality assurance functions.  The CLS provides laboratory specimen testing and including phlebotomy from patients and ensuring patient safety in a clinical laboratory environment.  Previous chemistry and flow cytometry experience is preferred.

General Responsibilities 

 

  • Perform high complexity test according to validated protocol and produces complete and accurate laboratory results
  • Follows protocol for setup testing and reporting patient samples and controls. Takes appropriate action in discrepant or unexpected test results. Documents as appropriate.
  • Quality Control and Results analysis
  • Performs proficiency testing accurately and timely.
  • Performs maintenance and calibration for instruments as scheduled, when asked and within set time frame.
  • Maintains all laboratory documentation follow document control and clinical laboratory quality management plan
  • Maintains a neat/clean organized work area and keeps working supplies and reagent inventories
  • Patient registration and process payment when assigned by lab supervisor
  • Demonstrates the ability to accurately, efficiently and safely perform venipuncture blood collection procedures. Completely conforms to guidelines in blood drawn procedures.
  • Accessioning of test order and Specimen Processing
  • Ability to work in a bio-hazard environment and follow safety policies and standards outlined in the Safety Manual
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communication with all employees and clients, while having attention to detail
  • Strong computer skills to accomplish tasks
  • Recognizes and resolves problems, troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment
  • Attentive to record keeping, documentation of work performed and required clerical tasks.
  • Demonstrates the flexibility to adjust schedule in response to test work flow, orders or fluctuations in the workload.
  • Follows up on conflicting or irregular patient problems.

 

Job Qualifications & Skills

Education:

  • BS / BA degree in Science required.

Experience:

  • 3+ years of equivalent experience (high complexity testing)

License/Certification:

  • Current California State License for Clinical Laboratory Scientist required.
  • ASCP certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology preferred.
  • Excellent skill in Microsoft Word, Excel and data analysis
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, are essential in this collaborative work environment
